Gary McMahan and Vel Miller
Gary McMahan is a singer, songwriter, and cowboy poet who is probably best known for his song “The Old Double Diamond.” He and his wife, Candace, live on a little place in northern Colorado. He quit cowboying and horse outfitting and is now singing and entertaining full time. He says, “That guitar don’t buck, he don’t bite or kick, he don’t eat hay…and if I do sing a wrong note, it hasn’t occurred to him to sue me!”
Vel Miller and her husband, Warren, own a ranch on the central coast of California where they raise Texas longhorn cattle, beef cattle, and American quarter horses. Vel paints, sculpts, and draws the things she loves. Vel illustrated several pieces in Gary’s book Gary McMahan in Poetry & Song and has illustrated many other books and articles, including all the illustrations in Western Horseman calendars in the years 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000.
